dreams: a bridge to the future?

KIM LEE-OWN

ABOUT WORKSHOP

Adlerian theory considers dreams as an important tool to understanding the human psyche. Along with family constellations and early memories, dreams serve as a tool through which we can learn how to understand ourselves and connect to our experiencing.

Our dreams are a reflection of our personality and what appears in them replicates a lifestyle and reflects expectations, fears and private logic.

Mossak & Maniaci (1999) claim that we dream to support our actions in our present and future lives. In dreams we practise our future direction, solve problems and attune ourselves for the next day. All while we are asleep!

In this workshop we will

  • introduce the subject of the dream as an important aspect of working according to the Adlerian approach, which allows us to understand ourselves and our clients.
  • introduce Adlerian theory and concepts that can help us understand how dreams work and how dreams cooperate with us.
  • show the connection between dreams and lifestyle.
  • learn how we can use dreams when seeking solutions and support for future direction (see areas mentioned by Mosak and Maniacci).
  • show how Adlerians interpret dreams and work with the meaning of symbols in dreams.
  • look at the key differences between Adler's ideas about dream work and other psychological theories.
  • work with the participants' dreams, so you can start writing down your dreams now. You will have the opportunity to share them with the group and work with them.

This workshop is aimed at professionals in the helping professions, but anyone interested in Alfred Adler's ideas is also welcome.

This workshop will be conducted in English.

ABOUT KIM

In 2003, Kim Lee-Own gained qualifications in Adlerian counselling and became passionate about parent education. Kim has taught on the Certificate and Diploma in Adlerian Counselling programmes for Cambridge Adlerian training and has recently started teaching a new format diploma programme in Milton Keynes.

As a result of relocation, pandemics and the 'empty nest', Kim has begun to explore the theme of encouragement and ways of fostering creativity through fairy tales, dreams and stories to help people discover possibilities and develop their 'I CAN' beliefs.

Her favourite quote is from Mother Teresa who said, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love."

Her dream job is organising retreat programmes at the beach in the Caribbean.
